Wolverines Drop Series Opener to Minnesota in Annual Pink Game

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 23-ranked University of Michigan softball team scored early and late but could not overcome a three-run third inning in a 3-2 loss to Minnesota in its annual Pink Game on Friday (April 29) in front of 1,730 fans at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.

Michigan used a strange play to strike first in the opening frame. Senior catcher Hannah Carson appeared to foul the ball off her foot before it dribbled to the Gopher first baseman. The throw went home, but graduate student outfielder Kristina Burkhardt, who led off with a walk, beat it to score, while Carson was called safe on a fielder's choice.

The Golden Gophers took a 3-1 lead with three hits in the third, including a three-run homer to right field.

Michigan cut the lead in half with a run in the sixth on an RBI single from freshman outfielder Ellie Sieler, who plated Carson with a hard bouncer up the middle. Sieler paced the Wolverines with two hits in the contest.

Graduate student LHP Meghan Beaubien (8-5) was solid in the loss, striking out nine Golden Gopher batters while allowing three runs on six hits -- half of which came in the third inning -- and a walk.

Michigan (29-14, 9-8 Big Ten) will resume the weekend series against Minnesota with a 4 p.m. slate tomorrow (Saturday, April 30) at Alumni Field, Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office, and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
