
Zawada Becomes All-Time Leading Scorer in Defeat at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Junior Josh Zawada became the program's all-time leading scorer as the University of Michigan men's lacrosse team saw the 2022 season come to an end with a 16-10 defeat against the No. 10-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament on Saturday (April 30) at Ohio Stadium.
Zawada scored three goals and dished out an assist for four points to become the program leader for points in a career with 148 (83g., 65a.). He also broke the single-season record for goals in a year with 43.
Michigan (7-8) got on the board first, when sophomore Isaac Aronson scored from the slot at 9:38 of the opening quarter. The assist was credited to Zawada, his 34th of the season.
The Buckeyes (10-4) closed the quarter with four unanswered goals. Despite the three-goal deficit, U-M outshot the Buckeyes, 17-7, in the opening stanza. U-M outscored OSU, 5-3, in the second quarter to close the half trailing by one score at 7-6.
The Buckeyes led 7-2 with 6:53 to go in the second, but U-M closed with four unanswered markers from freshman Aidan Mulholland, junior Jake Bonomi, Zawada and freshman Ryan Cohen with two seconds left in the second as U-M went into the half trailing by the single goal.
Ohio State scored its first goal in nearly 15 minutes at the 7:34 portion of the third, as Jack Myers put an end to the Michigan run and brought the score to 8-6. OSU's Colby Smith scored two straight to stretch the Buckeye lead to 10-6.
Following a Jackson Reid goal that made it 11-6 with 1:15 to go in the third, Zawada marked his second of the day at 1:01 to make the tally 11-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
OSU began the fourth on a 3-0 run, running the count to 14-7. U-M answered with three-straight tallies, as junior Ryan Schiber put an end to the OSU run with 8:37 to go, finishing in close on a feed from Cohen. Zawada tallied his third with 6:40 in the fourth. Just over two minutes later, Cohen connected on his second of the afternoon on a dodge from X, bringing the count to 14-10 with just over four minutes to go.
However, it wasn't enough as OSU closed the contest with two scores to bring the contest to its final resting place of 16-10.
