DES MOINES, Iowa -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team scored two event victories on the final day of the Drake Relays on Saturday (April 30), with Aasia Laurencin at least partially responsible for both.
Laurencin opened the day by taking down national contenders and the defending Big Ten Conference champion to win the 100-meter hurdles, and she followed up half an hour later with a leg of the winning 4x100-meter relay, along with Ameia Wilson, Hanna Hearn and BreeAna Bates.
Running into difficult wind conditions for the second straight day, Laurencin clocked a Michigan career-best 13.30 into a headwind (-1.8m/s) to take the victory by nearly a quarter of a second over national No. 6-ranked Masai Russell of Kentucky. Russell's national top-25-ranked teammate Darci Khan was third in 13.56, with reigning Big Ten champion Destiny Huven of Wisconsin fifth in 13.96.
Laurencin moved up a spot on the all-time Michigan rankings in the event to No. 4 and is only .02 of a second away from becoming the fastest woman in school history who does not have the last name Ofili.
Her title was also the first in Drake Relays history for Michigan by a woman not named Ofili, as Tiffany Ofili won the event in 2008 and 2009, and Cindy Ofili claimed it in 2015 and 2016.
Laurencin ran the third leg of the 4x100 relay that clocked 45.22, ahead of conference rival Iowa in 45.46.
The anchor leg, Bates, also featured in the 100-meter final earlier in the afternoon with a fourth-place finish in 12.20 (-3.8m/s).
Michigan also got a fifth-place result in the distance medley relay from Sam Tran, Savannah Sutherland, Aurora Rynda and Alice Hill in 11:25.97.
Michigan will host the Len Paddock Open next Saturday (May 7) on the final weekend of regular-season competition ahead of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on May 13-15.
