ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team dropped a 9-7 decision to Ohio State on Friday night (April 8) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines (9-5, 1-3 B1G) looked to rally back from a four-goal deficit with five goals from U-M reserves as Claire Galvin recorded her second career hat trick and Jill Smith scored two goals, but it would not be enough down the stretch as Ohio State (9-4, 2-1 B1G) held on for a two-goal victory.
As a team, Michigan had 21 shots with 17 on goal as Galvin and Smith led the offensive side of the ball and Kaitlyn Mead recorded five draw control wins, two assists and one goal. Mead was also impressive on the defensive side of the ball with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Graduate student Arielle Weissman made 10 saves in the loss, which marked her fourth game this season with double-digit saves.
OSU went on a 4-0 run to start the game before Michigan cut the lead in half with back-to-back goals in the second quarter, including a one-timer off a rebound from Julia Schwabe. However, the Buckeyes finished out the half with one final goal to take a 5-2 advantage heading into the halftime break at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Weissman made eight saves in the opening 30 minutes of play and the Wolverines had 11 total shots with 10 on goal.
Michigan opened the third quarter with Smith's second goal of the day off a pass from Caroline Bean before Galvin netted back-to-back goals to bring Michigan within one, 6-5, with 3:41 left to play in the third stanza. OSU added one final goal to take a two-goal lead into the final 15 minutes of play at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
U-M and Ohio State exchanged goals in the fourth quarter with each team scoring a pair, but the Maize and Blue could not overcome the two-goal deficit and fell to the Buckeyes, 9-7.
Michigan will hit the road Saturday (April 16) for a 1 p.m. contest at Penn State. The game is set to be streamed on B1G+ with a paid subscription.
