STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 19 University of Michigan women's lacrosse team closed out its regular-season road play with an 8-7 overtime victory at Penn State Saturday (April 16) at Panzer Stadium. Freshman Jill Smith netted the game-winning goal for Michigan, while goalie Arielle Weissman made 13 saves in the victory.
With 1:28 left in the overtime period, Michigan (10-5, 2-3 B1G) called a timeout and came out on the attack on offense. Caitlin Muir fed the ball to Smith, who drove straight down the center of the lane and fired the game-winning goal with 1:06 on the clock to lift U-M to its second Big Ten Conference victory of the season.
Freshman Julia Schwabe, sophomore Annabelle Burke and senior Kaley Thompson all scored a pair of goals for the Wolverines in the win, while freshman Kaylee Dyer netted one goal and Muir had two assists in the victory. On the draw, Kaitlyn Mead and Hailey Mead totaled six draw-control wins as each won three on the day, while Burke added two.
Defensively, Morgan Whitaker picked up five ground balls and had two caused turnovers and Maddie Burns had two ground-ball pickups.
Schwabe put the Wolverines on the scoreboard first with a free-position goal just over five minutes into the game. Penn State tied it up, but once again Schwabe found the back of the cage, this time on a low shot off a pass from Muir to give Michigan the 2-1 advantage. However, the Nittany Lions found the equalizer before the end of the quarter as the two teams headed into the second 15 minutes of action tied at 2.
Penn State scored the go-ahead goal four minutes into the second quarter to lead 3-2 until 2:30 left in the half, when Burke brought the ball in from the right side of the field and fired a shot into the back of the cage to allow Michigan to take a 3-3 tie into the halftime break.
U-M tallied 11 shots with six on goal in the first half of action, while Weissman made 10 saves in the opening 30 minutes of play for the Maize and Blue.
Michigan tallied back-to-back goals to start the third quarter, as both Thompson and Dyer scored for the Wolverines. Penn State tied it at 5 with six minutes to play, but a second Thompson goal allowed U-M to take a 6-5 advantage into the final 15 minutes of play.
Penn State outscored Michigan 2-1 in the final quarter to force an overtime period with the score tied at 7.
The Wolverines will conclude their 2022 regular season Saturday (April 30) when they welcome Maryland to town for a noon contest at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
