ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The University of Michigan baseball team garnered three All-Big Ten selections as the conference announced its 2022 award recipients Tuesday afternoon (May 24).
Junior outfielder Clark Elliott highlighted Michigan's selections with his first team designation. Named to the third team were graduate student outfielder Joe Stewart and graduate student third baseman Matt Frey. Frey also was named Michigan's Sportsmanship recipient.
Entering the Big Ten Tournament, Elliott ranks among the lead leaders in most offensive categories as one of the nation's premier leadoff hitters. He leads U-M in batting average (.346), runs (61), extra-base hits (29), home runs (12), RBI (58), OPS (1.078) and walks (43), while also ranking second with 15 stolen bases.
Named as the top MLB Draft prospect in the Big Ten Conference by D1Baseball.com, Elliott has lived up to the billing as the owner of 24 multi-hit games and 16 games with multiple runs batted in. Elliott led off the season with a home run to start the State Farm College Baseball Showdown against Texas Tech and had a three-homer, eight-RBI game at Michigan State on April 15. Elliott enters tournament play as one of the hottest hitters in the conference after hitting three homers in the final regular-season series against Rutgers, including a two-home run game on May 19 and a two-run homer in his last at bat of the regular season on May 21.
Stewart, a Portage, Mich., native, had a career year wearing the maize and blue. He presented a challenging one-two punch in the batting order for opposing pitchers, leading U-M with 79 hits and ranking just behind Elliott with a .343 batting average, 11 home runs, 51 RBI and a .957 OPS. In addition, Stewart led Michigan and ranked among the league leaders with 22 stolen bases in 23 attempts. Stewart had 23 multi-hit games and set U-M single-game records against Ohio State on April 23 with two grand slams in the same inning and 11 RBI as part of a three-home run game. Stewart excelled in rivalry games, batting a combined 7-for-17 with eight runs, six RBI, two homers, two doubles and three stolen bases against his former Michigan State team.
Frey, who will graduate with two graduate degrees from U-M, was a threat to go deep throughout the season while showcasing an excellent eye at the plate. The lefty batted .303 with 11 doubles, 10 homers, 44 RBI and 33 walks for a .936 OPS. Frey had eight games of at least three hits, highlighted by a 4-for-6 game with three RBI at Florida International on Feb. 27.
