NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team was recognized for its combination of athletic and academic excellence throughout the 2022 season on Wednesday (July 13) as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its All-Academic honors.
Among the All-Academic Individual honorees around the nation were 14 Wolverine men, one shy of the program-best total set a year ago, who led the team to its sixth-straight season earning the All-Academic Team distinction.
All-Americans Dubem Amene, Miles Brown, Tom Dodd, Nick Foster and Joshua Zeller all earned the honor to go along with their significant athletic accomplishments.
This marked the fourth consecutive year as an All-Academic Individual on the track for Devin Meyrer, with Mason Mahacek claiming the award for a third season in a row.
Amene, Dodd, Foster and Zeller, as well as Tom Brady and Oli Raimond, all earned the award for the second time in their careers.
Earning this honor for the first time in their respective careers were Bera Ajala, Lawrence Gilliam, Jacob Koerner, Henry Sheldon and Eli Winter.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or better and have met one of two athletic standards. For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
Zeller was the Wolverines' top performer on the track in 2022. En route to earning a spot at this month's World Championships in the 110-meter hurdles, he finished third at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, set a Big Ten record in the event at 13.19 (+1.6m/s), won Big Ten titles both indoors and outdoors, and was an All-American indoors in the 60-meter hurdles.
Brown was prolific in his debut season with the Wolverines, earning three All-America honors -- first team indoors on the distance medley relay and second team both indoors and outdoors at 800 meters -- and claiming a pair of Big Ten medals. He also broke school records indoors at 600 and 800 meters, and as part of the distance medley relay.
Amene also earned first-team honors and got a share of the school record as a member of the DMR. Additionally, he was a second-team All-American indoors at 400 meters and competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at that distance. He was the Big Ten silver medalist both indoors and out at 400 meters, and also broke the indoor school record at that distance.
Dodd and Foster ran the opening and anchor legs of the distance medley relay at NCAAs, and Foster was a member of the team that broke the school record. Dodd also was fourth at Big Tens in the outdoor 1,500 meters, and Foster was fourth in the mile indoors and eighth at 1,500 meters outdoors.
Brady was a three-time scorer for the Wolverines at the Big Ten Championships in events ranging from 3,000 to 10,000 meters. Mahacek was a two-time scorer for Michigan in the combined events both indoors and outdoors.
Ajala scored for Michigan indoors in the triple jump, and Koerner and Gilliam both scored as members of Michigan relays.
