» Meredith Haakenson and Sammi Woods scored two goals apiece as U-M fired 35 shots, 12 on goal.
» The seven scores tie for a season high and are the second most in a match in program history. The match was tied at 1 in the 48th minute, but the Wolverines went on a 6-1 second-half scoring run.
TOLEDO, Ohio -- Graduate student Meredith Haakenson and junior Sammi Woods each scored a pair of goals in a six-goal second half barrage as the University of Michigan women's soccer team defeated Toledo 7-2 on Sunday (Sept. 11) at Toledo's Paul Hotmer Field.
Michigan (5-2-1) got on the board first in the 10th minute. Haakenson beat a pair of Rocket defenders at the top of the six and played a squad ball scene across the face of goal. Her chip service we redirected by junior Kacey Lawrence and finished lower left.
U-M had a handful of chances of quality the rest of the half, with Woods responsible for near misses in the 21st and 25th minutes, the latter a header that went off the crossbar. Then, in the 33rd, Lawrence headed an effort from distance and squealed just wide of goal.
At the half, U-M led the shot category 15-4 and had four corners to one for the Rockets.
Toledo (1-3-2) equalized in the opening minutes of the second half on a set-piece opportunity. Coming off a lofted service from the left wing, a header in front was blocked and eventually slotted home by UT's Mia Leonetti only three minutes in.
Just over eight minutes later, U-M regained the lead. An alert Haakenson picked the pocket of a Toledo defender inside the Rocket box. She then capitalized on a skipping ball lower-left as the Wolverines retook the lead.
Sophomore Avery Kalitta registered her first career goal in the 67th minute, smashing home a strike with venom lower-left inside the area to make it 3-1. Nearly four minutes later, Woods stretched it to 4-1 with a class finish in front.

Graduate student Margot Ridgeway was sent off in the 73rd minute for taking down a UT attacker inside the box. The ensuing penalty by Morgan Otteson was saved by senior goalkeeper Katherine McElroy, who entered the match in the second half. Two minutes later, Otteson cut the Wolverine lead in half with a score in the 75th minute as U-M led 4-2.
Haakenson punched in her second in 81st minute, as she was fouled inside the Rocket defensive third to result in a penalty kick that was slotted home for her second goal of the half. Woods (84th) and junior Sarah Bridenstine (85th) capped off the scoring for the Wolverines en route to the victory.
Michigan outshot Toledo 35-9. Junior Stephanie Sparkowski made her first start in goal, while McElory played the second. Each goalkeeper turned in three saves apiece.
With non-conference play concluded, U-M sets its sights on Big Ten play, beginning with a trip to Maryland to take on the Terrapins on Friday (Sept. 16) at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
