
Wolverine Men Finish Eighth in South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's cross country team finished eighth at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational at Burke Golf Course on Friday morning (Sept. 30).
The Wolverines raced against competitors from around the country including No. 14 Notre Dame, No. 22 Montana State, No. 24 Butler, No. 25 Alabama, Boise State, Bradley, Cal Poly, Charlotte, Eastern Kentucky, Florida State, Liberty, Navy, New Mexico, NC State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Southern Utah, Tennessee and UC Santa Barbara. Michigan finished with 217 team points with Notre Dame finishing first with 81 points.
Senior Nick Foster finished in 15th place and was the Wolverines' fastest runner throughout the race. Through the first mile, Foster was in fourth place, but slipped to 21st at the halfway point. Foster was able to pick up some ground in the second half to finish with a time of 23:38.4.
The next finisher for the Maize and Blue was graduate student Arjun Jha , who finished 22nd. Jha followed Foster's path for the first part of the race staying within a second of him until the final 1000 meters where Foster broke off. Jha finished with a time of 23:51.3 which is five seconds faster than his five-mile time last year at the same meet.
The Maize and Blue's next finishers were sophomore Oli Raimond (24.10.4) and junior Zach Stewart (24:15.4) who finished 47th and 56th as the Wolverines' third and fourth. The Wolverines' final-point scoring finisher was freshman Luke Venhuizen (24:30.2), who was making his competitive for Michigan.
Through the first mile, the top 60 competitors were separated by two seconds or less with the gap widening to seven seconds 4,000 meters into the race and 44 seconds with 1,000 meters to go.
A few men also ran in the Open Race, which was highlighted by senior James Gedris placing 11th with a time of 24:45.1 and junior Jack Spamer finishing 16th with a time 24:54.0.
The Wolverines have a week off before their next meet, the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Oct. 14 in Madison, Wis.
