
U-M Scores Nation's First 198.000 to Earn Victory Over No. 9 Denver, Fisk

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team was the first in the nation this season to post a score of 198.000 or higher as it scored a 198.125 to earn a victory over No. 9 Denver (197.200) and Fisk (184.800) in a tri-meet Friday night (Jan. 13) at Crisler Center.
U-M's score also was the first score of 198.000 or better at Crisler Center and the eighth in program history. It ranks fourth in program history and is the first since the Wolverines scored a 198.200 at the 2022 Big Ten Championship.
Graduate seniors Abby Heiskell and Natalie Wojcik took home two titles each, with Heiskell winning floor exercise and a piece of the all-around title. Meanwhile, Wojcik earned wins on uneven bars and balance beam while tying her career best of 9.975 on bars for the second straight week and posting a 9.950 on the beam. Heiskell tied Sierra Brooks and Gabby Wilson for the all-around title with matching 39.600s and earned a 9.950 on the floor to take home the solo win.
The Wolverines came out firing on all cylinders in the first rotation, counting five scores of 9.900 or higher with Wilson, Naomi Morrison and Brooks notching three straight 9.950s, while Wojcik and Heiskell earned 9.900s. Michigan led the field scoring a 49.650, with Denver and Fisk following with a 49.300 and 45.900, respectively.
Moving into the second rotation, Heiskell started off hot with a 9.900 before Wilson and Brooks earned matching 9.900s of their own. Wojcik led U-M for the second straight week on the uneven bars with a 9.975 that would allow the Wolverines to go into the third rotation with a team score of 99.175, leading both Denver (98.475) and Fisk (94.050).
Wilson scored a 9.875 in the second spot on beam for the Maize and Blue before Wojcik once again closed out the rotation with an impressive 9.950 as Michigan took a solid lead into the final rotation of the evening.
The Wolverines lit up the floor as they posted four straight routines of 9.900 or better, led by a 9.950 from Heiskell. Senior Nicoletta Koulos also tied a career-best 9.925 for the second consecutive week and Morrison earned a matching 9.925, leading U-M to its first 2023 home victory.
Michigan opens Big Ten Conference action on Sunday, Jan. 22 when it travels to Michigan State. Start time is to be determined, and the meet will be broacast live on Big Ten Network.
