EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team fell to No. 14 Michigan State 197.200-196.975 on Sunday night (Jan. 22) at Jenison Field House in its first Big Ten Conference meet of the season.
Senior Sierra Brooks grabbed the outright floor title with a 9.950 and graduate seniors Abby Heiskell and Natalie Wojcik each earned a share of an event title as Heiskell tied for the uneven bars win with a 9.875 and Wojcik shared the beam title with a 9.900.
The Wolverines (3-2, 0-1 B1G) had their best rotation on the floor with three scores of 9.925-or-higher. Brooks won the title and Nicoletta Koulos and Naomi Morrison tied for second with 9.925s, which marked the third-straight for Koulos this season.
Michigan trailed Michigan State (2-1, 1-0 B1G) after the first rotation, scoring a team 49.375 on the uneven bars behind a team-high 9.875 from Heiskell, who shared the title with two Spartans. Moving into the second rotation, Gabby Wilson paced U-M with a 9.925 on the vault to place second overall as the Wolverines moved into the third rotation behind MSU, 98.650-98.500.
The Maize and Blue took its only lead of the night after a huge 49.550 on the floor as it looked to maintain a narrow 148.050-147.925 lead over Michigan State with one final rotation to go.
Despite a 9.900 from Wojcik in the anchor spot, the Wolverines were unable to pull out the victory, falling to Michigan State, 197.200-196.975, at Jenison Field House.
Michigan will return to Crisler Center Saturday (Jan. 28) when it hosts Ohio State at 4 p.m. The meet will celebrate National Women's and Sports Day and be streamed live on B1G+.
