CHICAGO, Ill. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team placed second at the Windy City Invitational with a team score of 396.050 on Saturday (Jan. 19) at Navy Pier. Illinois won the meet, while the Wolverines defeated Big Ten foe Ohio State in addition to Greenville, NIU and UIC.
As a team, U-M won floor exercise (65.05), still rings (67.00), parallel bars (67.35), and high bar (67.25). Individually, junior Chris Read (still rings), sophomore David Wolma (vault), junior Lais Najjar (parallel bars), and senior Adam Wooten (high bar) each captured individual titles. Freshman Landen Blixt won the all-around with a 76.600.
Michigan rotated in traditional Olympic order, and began the night on floor exercise. In the opening rotation, the Wolverines hit four of five routines, and scored a 65.05. Blixt led the way with a 13.35.
Following a 61.55 team score on pommel horse and running team total of 126.600, the Wolverines sat in third place. The third rotation found U-M on still rings, resulting in a team score of 67.00. Junior Chris Read scored a 13.70, with senior Adam Wooten and freshman Fred Richard each tallying a 13.45.
Sophomore David Wolma notched the top routine of the night for U-M on vault in the fourth rotation, sticking his vault to mark a 14.70. Junior Kyle Shuttle also chipped in a 14.50, but U-M only hit three of five routines for a 67.85.
On parallel bars in the fifth rotation, the Wolverines tallied a mark of 67.35, with sophomore Lais Najjar securing a 14.20. Najjar's score, along with a 13.95 from junior Evgeny Siminiuc resulted in a 67.35 for the Wolverines and a running score of 328.800 with one rotation left.
The Wolverines closed out the night on high bar, marking a team total of 67.25. Wooten once again paced U-M with a 14.10, while senior Steven Lukasik turned in a 13.90.
The Maize and Blue hit 21 of 30 routines on the night (70 percent), and stuck seven routines. They competed without the services of NCAA all-around and vault champion Paul Juda as well as senior standout Crew Bold.
The Wolverines will next travel to the Rocky Mountain Open next Saturday (Jan. 14) at 6 p.m. MST in Colorado Springs, Colo. The event will be the premiere meet in the NCAA this season, featuring the top-four teams in the country in No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 Michigan, No. 3 Oklahoma, and No. 4 Nebraska, as well as the host institution, Air Force.
