LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Junior Aasia Laurencin turned in a career-best effort and broke a facility and meet record on Friday (Jan. 27) as the University of Michigan women's track and field team opened action on the first day of the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational at the Norton Healthcare Sport and Learning Center.
Laurencin shaved five-hundredths of a second off her 60-meter hurdle time from a week ago, setting a new career-best and a facility and meet record with an 8.20 in the prelims to finish first in her heat. She nearly repeated the effort in the finals with a first-place finish in 8.21, good for over a tenth of a second faster than the next-closest finisher.
In the field events, junior Mia Manson cleared 4.18 meters (13 feet, 8.5 inches) for a fifth-place finish in the seeded pole vault contest. In the open pole vault, senior Cate Visscher and junior Morgan Flynn both set career-bests. Visscher cleared 3.88 meters (12 feet, 8.75 inches) to take eighth while Flynn cleared 3.58 meters (11 feet, 9 inches) to take twenty-eigth.
Fifth-year senior Theresa Mayanja and junior Clare McNamara had success across multiple pentathlon events. Mayanja's day was highlighted by a career-best in the high jump -- which she cleared in 1.65 meters (5 feet, 5 inches) to take third. She also took second in the shot put (12.22m), third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.71) and seventh in the 800 meter run (2:28.49). McNamara took second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:28:49, fourth in the shot put (11.71) and seventh in the high jump (1.56 meters)
The Wolverines will finish the second day of the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 28) in Louisville, with action beginning at 11 a.m.
