LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team placed second at the inaugural Super 16 presented by Ozone with a 197.400 Saturday (Jan. 7) at Orleans Arena.
Michigan used huge performances on floor exercise and uneven bars to lift itself into runner-up position behind No. 1 Oklahoma (197.925) in the season-opening meet. No. 5 Auburn (197.350) placed third and No. 10 UCLA (197.275) rounded out the meet.
Natalie Wojcik tied for the uneven bars title with a 9.975, while Sierra Brooks earned a piece of the floor title with a 9.950. Abby Heiskell placed fourth in the all-around with a 39.525 and Nicoletta Koulos recorded a career-best 9.925 on the floor.
After a shaky start on beam, the Wolverines came up with a huge 49.525 on the floor which led the field and included three straight 9.925s from Koulos, Heiskell and Naomi Morrison before Brooks closed it out with a team-high 9.950.
Sitting in fourth halfway through the meet, Brooks earned her second 9.950 of the night on vault and both Gabby Wilson and Morrison scored 9.875s to help U-M to a 49.400 in the third rotation of the evening.
Michigan paced all teams in its final rotation as it scored a 49.600 behind a 9.975 from Wojcik and a third 9.950 from Brooks. Also coming up with big routines in the final rotation were Heiskell and Koulos, who recorded a 9.925 and a 9.900, respectively, to lift Michigan to a second-place finish.
The Wolverines will open their 2023 home season on Friday (Jan. 13) when they welcome Denver and Fisk to Crisler Center at 7 p.m. The meet will be streamed live on B1G+.
