INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan men's cross country team has been selected to compete in the NCAA Cross Country Championships, the association announced Saturday (Nov. 11) during the NCAA selection show.
After battling to a third-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday (Nov. 10), the Wolverines were given one of the 13 at-large berths available to those teams that did not finish in the top two of the nine regional races around the country.
The NCAA meet is scheduled for next Saturday (Nov. 18) at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Va., at 11:10 a.m. The race will be streamed live on ESPNU.
This season's selection marks the fourth-consecutive appearance for Michigan after it was unable to qualify as a team in the 2020-21 campaign due to the COVID-19 shutdown in the U-M athletic department.
The process for deciding at-large berths comes down to the accumulation of head-to-head victories over teams that qualified for nationals, up to and including the regional meet.
The Maize and Blue performed up to expectations in a series of meets at Notre Dame and Wisconsin, positioning itself for a postseason run. The Wolverines finished second to Wisconsin at the Big Ten Championships on Oct. 27.
Michigan had another strong performance on Friday (Nov. 10) at the regional meet, outlasting Notre Dame and in-state rivals Michigan State to earn its way to the national meet with an at-large bid.
