
Groumi Wins 200-Yard Butterfly; U-M Finishes Fifth at Georgia Invitational

ATHENS, Ga. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team closed out the third and final day at the Georgia Invitational on Saturday (Nov. 18) at Gabrielsen Natatorium on Saturday (Nov. 18). The Wolverines tallied 495.5 points to finish fifth ahead of Georgia Tech.
Florida took home first place with 1,169 points.
Gal Groumi provided the highlight of the day for the Maize and Blue by winning the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:40.54. Teammate Tyler Ray finished second overall, touching the wall at 1:43.13, and freshman Colin Geer grabbed fourth with a mark of 1:43.61.
Other top-10 performances in event finals included Eitan Ben-Shitrit, who finished sixth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:43.08, eclipsing his previous season best by more than three seconds, along with Bence Szabado's seventh-place result in the 100-yard freestyle (42.57 seconds). Ansel Froass grabbed 10th in the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:56.26.
In the lone relay event of the final day, the "A" team of Groumi, Szabados, Ben-Shitrit and Jack Wilkening combined to log a time of 2:50.60 in the 400-yard freestyle relay to finish fourth overall.
In the dive well, Kameron Liberman led the way for the Wolverines in platform diving, posting a score of 300.75 to finish 11th overall.
U-M will take an extended break before returning to team action on Friday, Jan. 19 at noon, when they play host to Indiana inside Canham Natatorium. Admission is free to all regular-season home meets.Â
