ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team earned a bounce-back victory on Friday (Dec. 22), defeating Florida A&M, 77-35, at Crisler Center. With the win, Michigan closed out the non-conference portion of its season by winning nine of its 12 contests.
Lauren Hansen took charge of the scoring for the Wolverines, leading the team with 19 points on 7-for-9 shooting, including five first-quarter triples. Elissa Brett added 15 points of her own in the contest, while also tying the team lead in rebounds and taking the steals crown with six boards and three swipes, respectively.
Hansen got off to a blistering start early in the first quarter, making her first five shots -- all three-point attempts -- to put the Maize and Blue on a 17-3 scoring run over five and a half minutes of the initial goings. Though the Rattlers closed the quarter on a 7-4 run of their own, the Wolverines kept FAMU from coming any closer than a nine-point cushion headed into the quarter break.
A defensive back-and-forth in the first three minutes of the second quarter was broken by Brett, who went coast-to-coast on a steal to score the quarter's first points. Brett's fast break opened the floodgates for Michigan's offense, as the Wolverines went on an uncontested 11-point run through the second media timeout. Defensively, the Maize and Blue locked the Rattlers out from the basket, holding FAMU scoreless through over seven and a half minutes of play and allowing zero makes in 12 attempts from the field across the quarter. As the clock hit zero, Michigan took a commanding 43-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Brett and Hansen combined for 12 of the Wolverines' 18 total points in the third quarter, while the Maize and Blue held the Rattlers to a second-straight quarter of single digit scoring to head into the final 10 minutes with a 61-21 lead. Despite a back-and-forth end to the game, Michigan ultimately finished with a 42-point victory, its second 40-point victory this season, to remain a perfect 3-0 following a loss.
With the out-of-conference slate concluded, the Wolverines dive into the Big Ten schedule with their annual Blue Out game against Ohio State at noon on Saturday (Dec. 30). The game will be televised on Fox.
