CLEMSON, S.C. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team marked Friday (Feb. 10) with multiple record-setting performances. The team competed at both Clemson's Tiger Paw Invitational and Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invitational. Michigan's distance runners represented at the Boston Track and Tennis Center, while sprints, hurdles, and jumps competed at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Complex.
At Clemson, the highlight of the day was a school record-setting pair of performances by Ziyah Holman and Savannah Sutherland in the 400-meter run. In the fourth heat of the event, Holman bested the school record she already held (52.55 seconds), running 52.49 on Friday. Minutes later, in the fifth heat, Sutherland topped Holman's performance, running 52.23 to re-set the record. Despite the marks, Sutherland finished sixth and Holman finished 10th.
Aasia Laurencin also set a career-best in the 60-meter hurdles. In the semifinals, she smashed her previous record of 8.20 seconds, finishing in 8.09 to take fourth place. This standout performance sent the hurdler to the finals, where she finished eighth with a time of 8.25.
In Boston, Sam Tran, Alyna Lewis, and Samantha Saenz had career-best performances. Tran ran 4:34.77 to take 15th in the five-heat mile race, Lewis ran 2:10.29 for 57th place in the 800 meters and Saenz took an entire minute off her previous best, running 16:05.60 to take 26th in the 5,000 meters.
The Wolverines will continue action Saturday (Feb. 11) at the Tiger Paw Invitational. Competition starts at 10 a.m. with Gabi Newman in the high jump and Theresa Mayanja, Clare McNamara, and Corinne Jemison in the shot put.
