
Michigan Suffers B1G Setback at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team suffered its first Big Ten setback of the season, falling by a 407.600-401.450 score at No. 5 Penn State on Saturday (Feb. 11) at PSU's Rec Hall.
Junior Evgeny Siminiuc highlighted the performances for U-M, as he scored a nation-leading 14.95 on parallel bars to lock in an event title. Additionally, junior Javier Alfonso tied for an event title on still rings (14.10), and freshman Fred Richard scored a 14.40 on high bar for wins.
The Wolverines (10-5, 2-1 B1G) trailed the entirety of the meet, and never recovered after scoring a season-low 63.30 on pommel horse in the second rotation. U-M was forced to chase at least a 3.25 deficit the for five rotations.
U-M's Virgil Watkins took third on parallel bars, marking a career-high 14.35 on the apparatus. Classmates Markus Shears (14.05) and David Willett (13.55) also placed second and third on pommel horse, respectively.
With the meet out of reach in the final rotation on high bar, U-M rallied to mark a season-best 68.300 on high bar and swept the top-three spots, with Richard taking the event title and senior Crew Bold and freshman Robert Noll tying for second place (13.85). Senior Adam Wooten followed with a 13.80.
In all, U-M won two events as a team, besting Penn State (7-4, 1-2 B1G) on still rings (68.850-68.050), and high bar (68.300-66.050).
The meet signifies the midway point of the 2023 season, with the Wolverines on a three-week break from team competition. Following a bye week on Feb. 18, select team members will compete at the USA Gymnastics-sanctioned Winter Cup Challenge (Feb. 24 and 26), in Louisville, Ky.
