Michigan Upended by UC San Diego on Day Two of MLB Desert Invitational

Scottsdale, Ariz. -- The University of Michigan baseball team continued its 2023 season-opening weekend at the MLB Desert Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 18), where the Wolverines dropped an 11-2 decision to the UC San Diego Tritons at Salt River Field.
Both teams were held scoreless in the first inning but Michigan (1-2) was able to score first with a run in the bottom of the second. Catcher Gabe Sotres singled to right field and then stole second base. He advanced to third on a groundout from Greg Pace Jr. before scoring on a single from Jack Van Remortel.
Michigan did not hold the lead for long, as the Tritons use two triples, an RBI groundout and a sac fly in the top of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.
UC San Diego (1-1) added one more run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to extend its lead to 5-1.
Following three scoreless outings, the Wolverines got back on the board in the bottom of the sixth, adding one to their tally. Tito Flores started the inning off with a single to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jordon Rogers pinch hit and sent a single into center field, scoring Flores and cutting the deficit to 5-2.
Michigan was unable to continue the momentum and was held scoreless for the remainder of the game. UC San Diego added three more runs in the seventh and then three in the ninth.
U-M starting pitcher Jacob Denner held the Tritons to just two earned runs over five innings while tallying three strikeouts and taking the loss. John Torroella came in relief for Denner and gave up two runs in the sixth, and Brandon Lawrence surrendered three runs across 1.1 innings pitched to close out the game.
The Maize and Blue will return to action at the MLB Desert Invitational on Sunday (Feb. 19) with a game against Grand Canyon at Sloan Park in Mesa, Arizona. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT, and the game will be streamed live on MLB.com.
