
Groumi's Record-Breaking Night Keeps U-M Third On Day Three at Big Tens

» Gal Groumi earned his second gold medal of the Big Ten Championships in the 100-yard butterfly, breaking the Big Ten, school and pool record with a time of 44.50 seconds.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team sits in third place (806 points) after day three at the Big Ten Championships on Friday night (Feb. 24) at Canham Natatorium after a record-breaking gold-medal performance from Gal Groumi and a silver medal from Wyatt Davis. Indiana leads with 1030.5 points.
Groumi picked up his second gold of the championships, finishing first in the 100-yard butterfly and setting a new Big Ten, school and pool record with a time of 44.50 seconds to nab an NCAA 'A' cut. Davis finished fifth with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 45.60, while Charlie Morici finished second in the B-final and Bence Szabados finished seventh.In the C-final, Cam Peel touched second with a time of 47.79.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Davis finished second and re-set the record he set in the event Thursday night (Feb. 23) with his time of 45.20. In the B-final, Nikola Acin touched seventh with a time of 45.51.
In the 400-yard individual medley, Jared Daigle (3:40.99) and Eitan Ben-Shitrit (3:43.49) touched second and third, respectively and picked up NCAA 'B' cuts. Ben-Shitrit led the first half of the race, but Wisconsin's Dominik Torok sped past the Michigan duo in the final 100 yards. In the B-final, Ansel Froass (3:47.77) touched fifth, Connor Hunt (3:47.98) sixth and Jacque Wenger (3:48.17) seventh.
Eduardo Moraes was the top finisher for the Wolverines in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing seventh in 1:35.18. In the B-final, Logan Zucker finished fourth and in the C-final, Juan Ceresa touched third, with all three earning an NCAA 'B' cuts.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Brendan Fitzpatrick swam his way to an NCAA 'B' cut with a time of 52.42, finishing seventh. In the C-final, Ozan Kalafat touched first with a time of 53.20 and Jack McCurdy finished third with a time of 53.70.
On the diving side, Cameron Gammage finished fourth on the three-meter springboard with a score of 4:09.85, while Kameron Liberman finished sixth in the B-final with a score of 325.65.
In the final event of the night, the quartet of Peel, Szabados, Groumi and Acin finished third in the 200-yard freesyle relay with a time of 1:16.60.
The Wolverines will finish the Big Ten Championships on Saturday (Feb. 25) at Canham Natatorium. Preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m., with the finals starting at 5:30 p.m. Both sessions will be streamed live on B1G+.
