
Ben-Shitrit Named Freshman of the Year, U-M Finishes Third at Big Ten Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team finished third at the 2023 Big Ten Championships with 1,163 points behind a strong effort on the final day of competition Saturday (Feb. 25) at Canham Natatorium.
Eitan Ben-Shitrit was named Freshman of the Year after collecting 69 points with one silver, two bronze and one 12th-place finish. Gal Groumi was the only Wolverine named to the All-Big Ten first team, while Ben-Shitrit, Jared Daigle, Wyatt Davis, Brendan Fitzpatrick, Eduardo Moraes, Bence Szabados, Nikola Acin and Cam Peel were named to the All-Big Ten second team.
Connor Hunt got the Wolverines started on the final night of the Big Ten Championships with a fifth-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle, finishing in 15:03.13.
Groumi was the top finisher for the Maize and Blue in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing second with a time of 1:40.21 and earning an NCAA 'B' cut time. Charlie Morici touched fourth in the B-final, while Logan Zucker finished third and Juan Ceresa finished fifth in the C-final, respectively.
Davis picked up another medal, this time in the 200-yard backstroke, with a third-place finish in 1:40.67. Daigle, Jacque Wenger and Ben-Shitrit touched second, third, and fourth in the B-final, picking up big points for the Wolverines.
Szabados sprinted to a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 42.67, picking up an NCAA 'B' cut time. In the B-final, Peel swam a personal-best 42.73 and finished first, while Acin finished right behind in second with a time of 43.02.
Ansel Froass was the best finisher in the A-final of the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing eighth with a time of 1:55.12. In the B-final, Ozan Kalafat finished fifth, while Fitzpatrick picked up the win in the C-final with a time of 1:55.29.
In the platform B-final for the U-M diving unit, Cameron Gammage finished third with a score of 312.55 and Kameron Liberman finished sixth with a score of 283.70.
The quartet of Szabados, Peel, Acin and Davis finished out the 2023 Big Ten Championships for the Wolverines with a bronze medal finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (2:49.44).
The Wolverines will return to the pool for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships (March 6-8) in Bloomington, Indiana.
