
Wolverine Contingent Closes Out Competition at Winter Cup

» Junior Javier Alfonso completed the best two-day effort for the Wolverines, placing fourth on still rings and seventh on floor exercise.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Four members of the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team were in action on day two of the USA Gymnastics-sanctioned Winter Cup on Sunday (Feb. 26) at Freedom Hall.
Day two of the competition featured action from junior Javier Alfonso, sophomore Rithik Puri, freshman Landen Blixt and graduate assistant coach Cameron Bock . Freshman Fred Richard, who qualified for the United States National Team on Friday (Feb. 24), did not compete.
In two-day scoring, Blixt placed second on high bar (26.850) and also earned stops in the top 10 on floor exercise (ninth, 26.400) and pommel horse (eighth, 26.502).
Bock took fifth on floor exercise (26.700) and seventh on high bar (25.900), while Puri's top score came on high bar, where he placed 14th with a tally of 23.950.
Alfonso secured a No. 4 finish on still rings (28.300) and also added a seventh-place mark on floor exercise (26.550).
Full team competition will resume on Saturday (March 4), as U-M travels to take on the No. 1-ranked Oklahoma Sooners at 6 p.m. CT from OU's McCasland Fieldhouse.
