ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and five singles matches to pick up its second straight win over No. 19-ranked Oklahoma State 6-1 on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 4) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan cruised to the doubles point behind wins at No. 2 and No. 1, grabbing a 1-0 lead just 35 minutes into the match.
At No. 2, Julia Fliegner and Lily Jones won the first five games before Oklahoma State got on the board at 5-1. Jones served it out in the ensuing game, wrapping up the win in just 25 minutes.
Michigan's No. 3 duo of Andrea Cerdan and Merri Kelly rallied from a 3-1 deficit, eventually tying the match at 3-3 to stay on court.
Kari Miller and Jaedan Brown recovered from a break of serve in the first game by winning five straight points for a 5-1 lead. After Oklahoma State thwarted Michigan's attempt to serve for the match, the Wolverines converted on the deuce point to break the Cowgirls for the 6-2 win.
Michigan won five first sets in singles action after Miller pulled out a 7-5 win at No. 2.
Brown wasted little time accounting for Michigan's second point of the afternoon, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1. Brown jumped out to 2-0 leads in both sets and never relented in the straight-set victory.
Moments later, Oklahoma State's Lucia Peyre retired at No. 4 with Lily Jones leading 6-3, 2-0 for Michigan's third point of the match.
Fliegner did the honors for Michigan, clinching the team win behind a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at No. 3. Fliegner got the break she needed at 3-1 in the first set, holding the rest of the way for the win. In the second, she went up 4-2 and did not look back to get the win.
Oklahoma State got on the board with a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (4) win at No. 6.
Miller came through with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 2 to give Michigan a 5-1 lead. Facing a 4-2 deficit in the first set, Miller won three straight games and held two set points on her serve at 5-4. Oklahoma State's Alana Wolfberg fought off both to tie the set at 5-5. Miller strung together two straight wins for a 7-5 win. Miller won four of the first five games of the second set before Wolfberg answered with two straight for a 4-3 Miller advantage. Miller returned the favor, winning the next two games for the 6-3 victory.
Cerdan rallied for a 1-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (5) win at No. 5, giving Michigan a 6-1 victory. After dropping the first set, Cerdan stayed on serve for the majority of the second set. She went up 6-5 and had a chance to serve for the set, but Ayumi Miyamota broke right back to send it to a second-set tiebreak. Cerdan was down 4-1 in the breaker before winning six of the next seven points for a 7-5 win. In the 10-point breaker in lieu of a full third set, Cerdan grabbed a 4-1 lead after dropping the first point. Miyamota closed within a point at 5-4, but Cerdan again had the answer by taking five of the next six points for the 10-5 win.
Michigan is back in action next Friday through Monday (Feb. 9-12) at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle. The draw will be released on Tuesday (Feb. 7).
