ORLANDO, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team opened its outdoor season Friday (March 17) at day one of the Black and Gold Invitational at the UCF Soccer & Track Complex. The day was highlighted by two event wins in the javelin and shot put.
Freshman Emma Yungeberg celebrated her first win in her collegiate outdoor meet debut. She threw an impressive 45.64m (149 feet, 12 inches) to win the javelin in a field of 29 athletes. Clare McNamara and Theresa Mayanja also competed in the javelin, taking 11th and 14th, respectively.
Corinne Jemison also had a successful day in the throwing events, taking first in the shot put and second in the discus. She threw 16.01 meters (52 feet, 6.5 inches) to claim the shot put win, besting her nearest opponent by just over a foot. Jemison was joined by Trinity Franklin in the event and she finished 11th with a throw of 13.57 meters (44 feet, 6.25 inches). In the discus, Jemison made a throw of 55 meters (180 feet, 5 inches) for second place, overtaking the third place competitor by six feet.
Also in the field events, Cate Visscher and Morgan Flynn had a successful day with top-10 finishes in the pole vault. Visscher took fifth in the event, clearing 6.65 meters (11 feet, 11.75 inches), an improvement on her seventh place finish at this meet last year. Flynn clinched ninth place, clearing 3.50 meters (11 feet, 5.75 inches).
Riley Ammenhauser, Mia Manson, and Nadia Saunders represented Michigan in the long jump, taking 12th, 25th and 27th places, respectively. Manson set a career best in the event, leaping 5.68 meters (18 feet, 7.75 inches) to improve on her previous best by four inches. Saunders hit an all-conditions best, with a jump of 5.64 meters (18 feet, six inches); however the leap was not wind legal.
Michigan saw three top-10 finishes in the two track events of the day -- the 400-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash. Nikki Stephens claimed third place in the hurdles with a tight race. The second- through fourth-place finishers all completed the race within one-tenth of a second of each other. In the 200 meters, Ziyah Holman took second place in an impressive 23.23 seconds. This is an all-conditions best for the sprinter, but the +2.1 m/s wind speed prevented the race from being legal. Savannah Sutherland also set an all-conditions best in the same race, taking sixth in 23.45. The race was full of Michigan athletes with Sophie Isom (27th, 24.57), Trinity Henderson (29th, 24.65), Hanna Hearn (44th, 25.12), Delaney Stersic (66th, 25.67), Mayanja (73rd, 25.83), McNamara (84th, 26.16) and Paige Chapman (92nd, 27.26) all competing as well.
The Wolverines will continue their time in Orlando on Saturday (March 18) with day two of UCF's Black and Gold Invitational at 9 a.m., with Franklin in the hammer throw.
