
Michigan Secures Big Ten Regular-Season Title With Win Over No. 5 Illinois

» U-M secured its third straight Big Ten regular-season championship after trailing most of the meet, taking the lead in the fifth rotation.
» Michigan posted a team score of 411.250, a new season best.
» Michigan won four team event titles on the meet with victories on still rings, vault, parallel bars, and high bar, and also hit 24-of-30 routines (80 percent), sticking nine performances on the afternoon.
» David Wolma (vault), Evgeny Siminiuc (parallel bars), and Adam Wooten (high bar) each secured individual event wins.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team recorded its third straight Big Ten regular-season title with a 411.250-405.550 win over No. 5 Illinois on Saturday (March 18) at Cliff Keen Arena.
Michigan (11-6, 3-1 Big Ten) won four events as a team with a 68.050 on still rings, 72.300 on vault, 68.250 on parallel bars and 68.250 on high bar.
Junior David Wolma secured a win on vault, equaling his season high with a 14.75. Classmate Evgeny Siminiuc chipped in a win on parallel bars (14.75), while senior Adam Wooten wrapped up the victory with an event-topping 14.30.
The Wolverines trailed by nearly four points after the second rotation but took the lead for the first time on the afternoon in the fifth rotation on parallel bars. The regular-season title was sealed with the effort on high bar, besting the Illini by more than five points on the apparatus to secure the win.
Competing without freshmen Fred Richard and Landen Blixt and reigning NCAA all-around champion Paul Juda, U-M recorded a season-best 411.250 score, besting its previous high of 410.400 (Oklahoma). The Wolverines also turned in season-best team score on vault (72.300).
Michigan also took home four runner-up finishes, with senior Markus Shears scoring a 14.40 on pommel horse. In addition, junior Javier Alfonso recorded a 14.30 on still rings and Siminiuc took second on high bar with a 14.00. On floor, Wooten and Alfonso scored a 14.20 to tie for second.

U-M hit 24 of 30 routines (80 percent) and stuck nine performances on the afternoon.
With the regular season now wrapped up, U-M sets its sights on winning its third straight Big Ten championship and 20th in program history. The Wolverines will be seeded No. 1, and will travel to Columbus, Ohio, for the postseason championships that begin on Friday (March 31) with team and all-around competition, followed by individual event finals the following day on Saturday (April 1).
The competition on both nights commences at 8 p.m. from Ohio State's Covelli Center. The championship will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
