ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team (11-1) will look to earn its sixth straight title at the Big Ten Championships on Friday and Saturday (April 3-4), hosted by Nebraska at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Team and all-around finals will begin at 7Â p.m. CT on Friday, while event finals will start at 7Â p.m. CT on Saturday. Both sessions to be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
Notes
• Michigan is the reigning Big Ten champion and will look for its sixth straight title to match the longest streak in program history. Fred Richard has won three straight all-around titles, the first three-peat in program history since Rick McCurdy in 1969-71, and a fourth title would be a program record.
• Last season, the Wolverines picked up seven medals at the Big Ten Event Finals, with Paul Juda (silver, all-around), David Wolma (silver, vault), Zach Granados (bronze, pommel horse), Solen Chiodi (bronze, vault), Evgeny Siminiuc (gold, parallel bars; silver, high bar) and Pierce Wolfgang (bronze, high bar) each taking home hardware. Juda, Richard, and Siminiuc earned All-Big Ten first-team honors, while Chiodi, Granados and Siminiuc were named to the second team. Chiodi and Aaronson Mansberger were selected to the All-Freshman Team.
• The Maize and Blue claimed the regular-season title for the fourth time in five years with its 330.400-325.650 win over Nebraska on March 22 at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines went undefeated in conference meets for the first time since 2021.
• Michigan is on a six-meet winning streak after topping the Huskers with its season-high score of 330.400, the second highest in the nation this season. The teams kept it close throughout the meet, but the Wolverines never trailed. After a shaky floor exercise rotation and a fall on the pommel horse, U-M responded with a season-high still rings score of 54.250 to take a 1.200-point lead at the halfway point. Season-high vault scores from both teams cut U-M's lead to 0.700 points, but strong performances on parallel bars and high bar secured the Michigan win.
• U-M picked up four event titles, with Charlie Larson winning the floor title (14.700), Mansberger capturing the pommel horse title (14.150) and Richard earning the parallel bars (14.150) and high bar (14.400) titles.
• The Wolverines sit second in the overall rankings, their highest position of the season. U-M remains first on high bar (54.000), second on the pommel horse (54.950) and still rings (53.700), improved to fourth on floor (54.117) and is fifth on parallel bars (52.967).
• Larson leads the nation on floor after posting a season-high 14.700 against Nebraska, owning an average score of 14.217, and sits third on vault (14.267). Mansberger comes in at No. 3 on pommel horse (14.383), while Akshay Puri (13.817) is seventh on still rings and Carson Eshleman is third on high bar (13.817).
• Richard was recently named a Nissen-Emery Finalist and Big Ten Gymnast of the Year for the second time in his career, winning six event titles and four weekly honors this season. The senior is ninth in the nation on still rings (13.750), fourth on parallel bars (14.017) and fifth on high bar (13.800).
• The Maize and Blue will defend its national title at the NCAA Championships on April 17-18 in Champaign, Ill., to close out the season.
