CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan rowing program kicked off its 2023 spring campaign with a session of early evening events on Friday (March 31), competing against No. 12 Duke across six races.
Potential weather complications forecasted for Saturday (April 1) led to the decision to move one session of races from Saturday morning up to Friday evening and to alter the location to Rivanna Reservoir.
U-M took the changes in stride and came ready to race. Approaching darkness with start times of 7 and 7:20 p.m., respectively, the 2V8 and 1V8 races were both tight. Duke's margin of victory was 3.6 seconds in the first race, and U-M's first eight was just 2.5 seconds behind the Blue Devils in the final race.
In the novice eight race, U-M's 1N8 posted a 14-second win. Duke claimed victory in each of the first two varsity four races before the Wolverine 1V4 provided the day's highlight with a win of nearly four seconds.
The Wolverines will race against No. 11-ranked Virginia Saturday with a morning session beginning at 9 a.m.
