U-M Upends Ohio State, Clinches First Home Big Ten Tournament Contest

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team defeated Ohio State 19-14 on Friday (April 21) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Junior Michael Boehm had a program-record eight goals, while the U-M faceoff unit won 29 of 37 faceoffs (78 percent), the most in program history.
With the Wolverines' win, coupled with a Penn State victory over Rutgers, Michigan will host its first-ever Big Ten Tournament contest on Saturday (April 29) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Time, opponent, as well as television designation, are to be determined. Tickets for the game will go on sale Saturday morning (April 22).
Michigan (6-6, 2-3 Big Ten) got on the board first, as senior Jake Bonomi scored the opening goal at the 13:51 mark of the first quarter. Ohio State responded with two goals to take the lead 2-1. U-M regained by scoring four goals in less than a minute between the 4:19 and 3:20 marks of the opening quarter. Junior Michael Boehm scored his 25th goal of the season at the 4:19 mark of the opening quarter to tie the game at 2. A goal from junior Justin Wietfeldt gave Michigan the lead at the 4:12 mark of the first quarter. Boehm scored his second goal of the game at 3:33 and sophomore Emmett Houlihan added to U-M's lead at the 3:20 mark.
In the second quarter, Ohio State (5-8, 1-4 Big Ten) scored two goals, bringing the score to 5-4. Michigan increased its lead to 6-4 following Boehm's third goal of the game at the 5:44 mark. Senior Josh Zawada scored Michigan's seventh goal of the game at the 3:08 mark. Ohio State scored two more goals late in the second quarter to make the score at 7 at halftime.
Houlihan scored his second goal of the game at the 14:39 mark of the third quarter. Boehm scored his fourth of the game at the 12:14 mark. Senior Jacob Jackson scored at the 10:25 mark, making the score 10-8 in favor of the Wolverines. Senior Ryan Cohen scored at the 6:22 mark and Boehm scored his fifth of the game at the 5:58 mark. Zawada scored two goals in the third quarter, coming at the 3:29 and 2:58 marks, respectively. Cohen scored his second of the game with 39 seconds left in the third. Boehm scored twice in the final two minutes of the quarter, bringing his goal total to seven in the game and pushing Michigan's lead to 17-9.
U-M opened the fourth quarter with Cohen's third goal of the game at the 14:07 mark, but was scoreless the rest of the quarter until Boehm scored with 52 seconds left in the fourth period. The goal, his eighth of the game, set a new program record for goals in a game, besting the seven goals Zawada posted on Feb. 22, 2022 against Canisius.
Graduate-student faceoff man Nick Rowlett won 15 of 20 draws, coupled with 14 ground balls, while Wietfeldt collected 14 of 17 with 10 ground balls.
The third quarter against Ohio State set a new Michigan Lacrosse program record for biggest goal margin in a quarter (eight), topping the previous record of seven, set against Detroit on Feb. 15, 2017. U-M also won a program-high 29 faceoff wins, eclipsing the previous record of 28 set against Bellarmine on Feb. 5, 2022.
