The University of Michigan women's track and field team concluded its competition at the Penn Relays and the Jim Green Invitational on Saturday (April 29) at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa., and Lexington, Ky., respectively. The Wolverines ended the day behind three event wins and multiple career-bests.
Jim Green Invitational
Aasia Laurencin will head back to Ann Arbor with a win under her belt in the 100-meter hurdles, winning both the preliminaries and finals. She dominated the event, posting an impressive time of 13.11 seconds in heat one of the preliminary round to automatically qualify for the event final. In the final, Laurencin rode the momentum to a win in 13.16. Both her preliminary and final times are Michigan program top-10 marks. Theresa Mayanja finished fifth in 14.36 after a seventh-place finish in the seventh-place (14.30) preliminary time.
A second event win came from Riley Ammenhauser in the triple jump. Ammenhauser fouled on her first three jumps but executed a winning jump on her fourth, leaping 12.53 meters (41 feet, 1.5 inches) to capture the event. She was followed in third by Nadia Saunders with a jump of 12.11 meters (39 feet, 8.75 inches).
The third win of the day came in the 4x400 meter relay, with Nikki Stephens, Ziyah Holman, Savannah Sutherland and Sophie Isom running an impressive 3:33.14 for a four-second win over the host Kentucky squad. The time also was the second best in Michigan program history, sitting only two-hundredths of a second behind the school record held by Holman, Isom, Stephens, and Aurora Rynda. Heaading into the postseason, Michigan holds the second- and third-best times in the Big Ten in the event.
U-M also saw numerous career bests on the track Saturday with sprinters competing in the 100 and 400 meters. Isom, Delaney Stersic, Trinity Henderson, and Meredith Soule competed in the 400 meters. Isom finished third (54.93), Stersic seventh (career-best 56.28), Henderson eighth (career-best 56.68) and Soule finished 20th (1:01.28). In the 100-meters, Bates finished sixth in preliminaries (11.71), setting up an 11.65 in the final -- the eight-fastest time in program history.
Back on the field, Mia Manson and Morgan Flynn competed in the pole vault. Manson clinched a fifth-place finish, clearing 3.66 meters (12 feet). Flynn no-heighted in the contest.
Penn Relays
Emma Yungeberg competed in the javelin, securing another program top-10 mark to accompany the three other top marks she holds. Yungberg's best throw of the day was 44.25 meters (145 feet, 2 inches), coming on her sixth and final throw. The freshman finished the event in seventh place with the fifth-best throw in program history.
Sam Tran, Cassie Kearney, Alyna Lewis and Anna Juul took part in the 4x800 Championship of America race. Coming off Thursday's (April 27) win in the 1,500 meters, Tran secured a solid position for the Wolverines before passing the baton to Kearney. She came out of the handoff strong, running a leg of 2:07.39 to maintain a quick pace for the first lap. Lewis held onto Kearney's momentum, holding her own as the sole freshman of the group. Juul made up for lost time on the final leg, passing Michigan State's Abbey Carvey on the second lap and ultimately securing a fourth-place finish for Michigan in 8:34.71.
Next up for the Wolverines is their last regular-seasom meet, Indiana's Billy Hayes Invitational, on Fricay (May 5).
