ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team scored four runs in the final five innings but fell to Oklahoma State, 8-5, on Sunday (April 30) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
The Cowboys drew a leadoff walk on Michigan (21-20) starter Noah Rennard, and the runner scored after a stolen base, groundout and single. Rennard settled in as he struck out the final two batters of the inning. Ted Burton got the first hit of the day for the Wolverines with one out and advanced on a stolen base and wild pitch to third with two outs. A strikeout ended the inning, causing Burton to be left on base.
Oklahoma State (30-13) extended its lead in the second with a runner reaching on an error who scored after a double and a groundout. The Wolverines had another good chance in the bottom of the second with two runners in scoring position and one out. Both runners were left on base as back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning.
The Cowboys once again extended their lead in the third this time off Chase Allen , who took the mound to start the inning. OSU had three hits in the inning and scored on an RBI single. U-M got its first run of the game with a home run from Jimmy Obertop in the bottom of the fourth. OSU scored four in the top of the fifth, starting with a leadoff home run. Seven more batters reached base in the inning with two scoring and three on base when Jake Keaser took the mound. After hitting a batter for his first pitch which scored a run, Keaser got the final batter looking and left the bases loaded.
The Wolverines tried to mount a comeback over the next few innings. Casey Buckley got the Wolverines going with a pinch-hit leadoff home run in the fifth inning. U-M added two more in the sixth as two hit-by-pitches put Jack Van Remortel and Tito Flores on base. Buckley singled through the right side which allowed both runners to score. Joey Velazquez singled with two outs, but a flyout ended the inning with Michigan leaving two on.
After the five-run fifth inning for Oklahoma State, five Michigan pitchers held the Cowboys scoreless over the final four innings and allowed just three hits. U-M added another run in the eighth after Obertop doubled to left center to start the inning. Obertop scored on a groundout from Dylan Stanton after advancing to third on a groundout from Flores. The Wolverines could not complete the comeback as another groundout ended the inning in the eighth and U-M went down in order in the ninth inning.
U-M will wrap up its home stand on Wednesday (May 2) against Kent State at Ray Fisher Stadium at 4 p.m. The game will stream live on B1G+.
