ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team lost 11-3 to Nebraska on Sunday (April 9) in the final game of their three-game series at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (17-14, 6-3 Big Ten) picked up where it left of on Saturday, plating a pair of first inning runs to take a quick 2-0 advantage. Cody Jefferis and Ted Burton hit back-to-back singles to start the inning, but Jefferis was out at third when Jonathan Kim hit into a fielder's choice. After Burton and Kim moved up a base on a Joe Longo groundout, they came around to score on a Jack Van Remortel single to left.
Jacob Denner ran into trouble in the top of the second, allowing Nebraska four runs -- one on a leadoff homer and a three-run shot later in the frame -- and the visitors grabbed a 4-2 lead.
The Huskers added to their lead in the third with another leadoff home run and consecutive doubles off to score a run and chase Denner, bringing on Cam Hart. He retired the next batter, and Ryan Zimmer did the same to end the inning with U-M trailing 6-2. Michigan had a good chance in the bottom of the third as it loaded the bases on a walk and two singles with two outs. However, a hard-hit ball caught by the pitcher ended the inning.
Zimmer retired the next four batters he faced, which included a 1-2-3 fourth. Jake Marti led off the bottom of the fourth with a 412-foot home run to center field, but it turned out to be the Wolverines' last run of the game. The Wolverines continued to push in the frame with a Joey Velazquez double and a walk, but both runners were left stranded.
The Huskers went on the score five runs over the next three innings, while Michigan tallied only two hits from the fifth through the eighth innings. Zimmer allowed ing just one hit over three innings but had three walks, two of which came in the sixth inning to bring on John Torroella. He allowed two inherited runners to score as part of a three-run frame to puch the Nebraska lead to 10-3.
Brandon Mann and Ahmad Harajli allowed just one run over the final three innings and combined to strike out three batters to quiet the Huskers offense. Dylan Stanton tried to get a rally going in the ninth with a leadoff single, but the Wolverines could not muster anything else and fell 11-3.
The Wolverines finish off their five-game homestand on Tuesday (April 11) at 4 p.m. when they welcome Butler to Ray Fisher Stadium. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
