OMAHA, Neb. -- Freshman Mitch Voit started on the mound for the first time this season, going 5.2 innings while recording four hits alongside Dylan Stanton to lead the University of Michigan baseball team to a 13-6 win over Indiana in a Big Ten Tournament elimination game on Friday (May 26) at Charles Schwab Field.
After a leadoff single, Voit retired seven in a row across three innings. Michigan (28-27) had two runners on in the bottom of the first, but a double play ended the inning. Jack Van Remortel doubled in the bottom of the second, but back-to-back strikeouts left him on base.
Indiana (41-18) got just its second hit off Voit in the top of the third, but a pop up and groundout, both to Cody Jefferis ended the inning. In the bottom of the third, the Wolverines took the lead when Jefferis walked with one out and stole second -- before scoring on a single from Tito Flores. On the next pitch, Ted Burton reached on a throwing error and Flores scored on the play. Voit helped himself out and singled to left field which allowed Burton to score.
Voit returned to the mound in the top of the fourth to retire the Hoosiers in order for the second time. Michigan once again scored three runs in the bottom of the inning, starting off with a Stanton double to right field. Jonathan Kim doubled to right field on an 0-2 count which scored Stanton from second. After a strikeout, Jefferis singled which moved Kim to third, before Burton came up big with two outs. Burton doubled to centerfield and both Kim and Jefferis scored to increase the U-M lead to six after four innings.
The Hoosiers got on the board in the top of the fifth after two singles, but Voit struck out the final batter of the inning to leave two runners on. U-M got the run right back in the bottom of the fifth as Voit singled down the left field line to start the bottom of the fifth. After advancing to second on a Van Remortel hit-by-pitch, Voit scored on the next pitch. Stanton laid down a bunt, scoring Voit on the resulting throw. Michigan could not add more as they went down in order to leave two runners on.
Voit started to struggle in the sixth and allowed the first four runners to reach which caused a pitching change and Ahmad Harajli to take the mound. IU added its second run of the inning on an error and cut the Wolverine lead to four runs.
U-M added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth after outs started the inning. Joey Velazquez drew a hit-by-pitch on a 1-2 count, before Voit singled to left field. Van Remortel and Stanton singled back-to-back which allowed Velazquez and Voit to score. The Wolverines added their final run of the inning on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch drawn by Gabe Sotres. With the Sotres hit-by-pitch, every Wolverine in the starting lineup reached base.
In the top of the seventh, IU added three runs on three hits to cut the Wolverine lead to 10-6. Jacob Denner took the mound and struck out the final batter of the inning on a full count. Denner allowed just one runner to reach base in the eighth to keep the Hoosiers at bay. Michigan added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth after Voit doubled to lead off the inning for his fourth hit of the day. Stanton added his fourth hit of the day on a single to right field which advanced Voit to third. After a walk from Kim, Buckley reached on a fielder's choice that got Voit out at home. With two outs, Jefferis doubled to right field and cleared the bases with Buckley, Kim and Jake Marti -- pinch runner for Stanton -- all scored.
Denner ended the ninth with an 11-pitch, 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts to pick up his third save of the season and second in last three days. Voit recorded his fourth win of the season, but first as a starter. Both Voit and Stanton had four hits on the day, Voit's first time in his career and Stanton's second.
The Wolverines will face off against Iowa on Saturday (May 27) in the Big Ten Tournament from Charles Schwab Field at 9 a.m. CDT. The game will air live on the Big Ten Network. If Michigan wins, the two teams will play again at 5 p.m. CDT and if Michigan loses, it will be eliminated from the Big Ten Tournament.
