OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team took its second loss of the 2023 season as it fell 2-1 to Creighton on Friday night (Sept. 8) at Morrison Stadium.
U-M (1-2-2) tallied 12 shots with six in each half, while freshman Alex Waggoner scored his second career goal and Michael Leon had the assist to notch his second point in as many games.
Freshman Isaiah Goldson made his first career appearance in goal as he entered the match in the second half and made four saves for the Maize and Blue.
The Bluejays (1-2-2) opened the scoring early as a ball slipped through the box and found the back of the net in the ninth minute and added its second goal in the 20th minute when a short clearance by the U-M defense was unsuccessful. Creighton continued to build on its lead in the 36th minute and took a 3-0 advantage, but the Wolverines continued to work as Leon sent a cross through the box to Waggoner, who tapped the ball in past the keeper to bring Michigan within two.
U-M attempted to bring the match within one before the halftime break, but shots from both Leon and Bryce Blevins were blocked in the closing minutes of the first half.
Goldson came on in goal in the second half and made four saves to keep the Bluejays off the scoreboard, but Michigan could not find the back of the net the rest of the way despite its six shots.
The Wolverines will open their Big Ten season Thursday (Sept. 14) when they travel to College Park, Md. for a 7 p.m. contest against Maryland that will be streamed live on B1G+.
