ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team took three doubles matches from No. 14-ranked Ohio State and seven singles matches from No. 20-ranked Georgia Tech to open up play at the Michigan Invitational on Friday afternoon (Jan. 12) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan took three-of-four doubles matches from the Buckeyes, highlighted by a 6-4 win from Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller over No. 21-ranked Irina Cantos and Luciana Perry. With the Wolverines up 2-1 and looking to consolidate the break, Ohio State rallied from a 40-0 deficit to take the game before holding at love in the next for a 3-2 lead. Kari Miller held her serve in the ensuing game on a deuce point and Michigan got the break it needed to follow for a 4-3 lead. After Brown held for a 5-3 lead, Michigan grabbed a pair of match points on OSU's serve but was unable to convert. Miller came through on her serve as Michigan won on the deuce point to seal the win.
Lily Jones and Julia Fliegner won the first two games of their match, but Ohio State countered with two straight wins to knot the match at 2-2. It was all Michigan from there as the Wolverine duo did not drop another game in a 6-2 win. OSU double faulted on the deuce point at 4-2, giving Jones and Fliegner all the space they needed.
Reese Miller and Bayley Sheinin wrapped up Michigan's day on the doubles court with a 7-5 win. In a back-and-forth match, the Wolverine duo got a timely break for a 6-5 lead. With Reese Miller back to serve for the match, OSU won the first three points of the game before the Wolverines roared back with four straight points to avoid the breaker in the 7-5 win.
In singles action against No. 20 Georgia Tech, Michigan dropped just one match.
Reese Miller was the first victorious Wolverine, taking a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ruth Marsh. Jones, ranked No. 47, grabbed a 6-1, 6-4 win over Scarlett Nicholson. Jones was in a 4-1 hole in the second set before ripping off five straight games to get the straight-set victory.
Fliegner picked up Michigan's first win over a ranked Yellow Jacket on the afternoon, methodically dispatching of No. 123-ranked Kylie Bilchev in straight sets. After a 6-1 first-set win, Fliegner was broken to start the second set but quickly erased the deficit, dropping just one more game the rest of the way in the 6-2 second-set win.
Piper Charney was the next Wolverine off court, getting a timely break at the end of the second set in a 6-4, 6-4 win over Meera Jesudason. She went up a break at 5-4 in the second set and served out the match in the next game at love in the victory.
Gala Mesochoritou took a 7-5 first-set win in her match before falling behind 5-1 in the second. She tried to mount a comeback to win in two but fell just short in a 6-4 loss. It was all Mesochoritou in the final frame as she dropped just two games in the 6-2 win.
Kari Miller, ranked No. 10, grabbed Michigan's second win over a ranked Jacket on the afternoon by dispatching of No. 107 Carol Lee in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. In the deciding third set, Miller recovered from an early break by winning four straight games for a 4-1 lead. She kept the break the rest of the way to record the win.
Brown dropped a marathon first set, falling 10-8 in the tiebreaker. After that, it was all her as she dropped just one game in the 6-7 (8), 6-1, 6-0 win over Given Roach.
Georgia Tech won the last singles match to finish as U-M went 7-1 on the afternoon.
The second day of the Michigan Invitational will begin tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 13) at 10 a.m., with Michigan facing Georgia Tech in doubles and singles to follow against No. 3 Georgia.
