CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team rallied in the final rotation on high bar to defeat Illinois with a 405.150 team score Saturday (Jan. 13) at Navy Pier in Chicago. The Wolverines also picked up a win over Simpson as well as club programs Washington and Northern Illinois.
How it Happened
Floor Exercise
The Wolverines (6-0) began the meet in traditional Olympic order. Graduate student Crew Bold and senior Javier Alfonso each shared the team lead, with Alfonso earning a stuck landing. U-M began the meet hitting all five routines, totaling a mark of 65.450 to start the meet.
Pommel Horse
U-M hit four routines on horse, with freshman Kyle Walchuk leading the contingent with a 13.750. Sophomore Landen Blixt scored 13.600 on the apparatus and Michigan scored a 67.750 for a running total of 151.200.
Still Rings:
Alfonso was head and shoulders above the competition, scoring a career-high 15.100, while senior Chris Read (13.900) each had stuck landings. The Maize and Blue marked a team total of 68.500 for a running total of 199.700 after a trio of rotations.
Vault
David Wolma led the charge on vault, scoring a 14.900 on the table with a stick bonus, while Blixt tallied a 14.650. The Michigan team total of 71.300 led to a running score of 271.000 after four rotations.
Parallel bars Junior Logan McKeown chipped in a 14.450 on the event, and freshman Pierce Wolfgang scored a 14.000 in the fifth rotation. In all, the Wolverines scored a 66.500 on the event and boated a running total of 337.500. Michigan trailed Illinois by 1.200 points heading into the last rotation.
High bar
With the Illini finishing the meet on pommel horse, the Wolverines countered with a 67.650 on high bar to secure the victory. U-M was paced by a 14.000 in the anchor position on the event. Senior Steven Lukasik and junior Rithik Puri scored matching 13.450's on the night to aid the effort.
Rithik Puri scored a 78.300 in the all-around, while Wolfgang compiled a 77.600.
