Michigan Second-Half Struggles Lead to Loss at Rival Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. --Â Despite shooting 60.9 percent in the first half, the University of Michigan men's basketball team shot just 25 percent in the second half and dropped an 81-62 contest to Michigan State on Tuesday night (Jan. 30) at Breslin Center.
Leaders and Best
Jaelin Llewellyn scored a season-high 18 points while shooting a season best 4-for-6 from three. Terrance Williams II scored 14 while grabbing three rebounds.
The Turning Point
After a Nimari Burnett three less than a minute gone in the second half gave Michigan a 38-33 lead, Michigan State went on a 16-1 run to take a 10-point lead over Michigan.
Second Half
MSU (13-8, 5-5 Big Ten) went on an 11-1 run to start the second half, making five straight field goals to force a U-M timeout with the Wolverines trailing 44-39 with 16:29 remaining. Michigan missed four straight field goal attempts and MSU took a 10-point lead, 49-39, at the 15:38 mark as its run was extended to 16-1.
Three straight field goals and a 7-0 Michigan State run extended the Spartans' lead to 61-46 with 10:44 left as Michigan (7-14, 2-8 Big Ten) was held without a field goal for 2:22. Beginning at the 12:24 mark, Michigan converted two of its next 10 field-goal attempts and trailed 75-57 with 3:29 left, while MSU cashed in on five of its seven over the span.
Michigan tried to close the gap but was unable, missing its last four attempts and did not make a field goal over the final 2:43 of the game.
First Half
Michigan held an early 8-5 advantage four minutes into the game. The Wolverines capitalized on four MSU turnovers and went on a 7-0 run. U-M led 15-8 with 11:52 left in the first after making three straight field goals while holding MSU scoreless for almost four minutes.
Tarris Reed Jr. hit his first career three-pointer as the shot clock expired to give Michigan a nine-point advantage (18-9) with 11:25 remaining. U-M continued its hot shooting as its field-goal streak extended to six straight, but Michigan State inched closer and Michigan held a 22-19 advantage with 7:49 left in the half.
Michigan's field-goal streak topped out at nine and after a defensive stop, Llewellyn nailed a second-chance three-pointer to put U-M up by seven, 32-25. The U-M three was answered by an MSU three-pointer as U-M led 32-28 with 3:05 left to play. Michigan State hit a jumper and converted on a three-point play with under a minute to go and Michigan led 35-33 at halftime.
What's Next
Michigan will return home to face Rutgers on Saturday (Feb. 3) at Crisler Center. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
