
Young, Kittay Win ITA Midwest Regional Doubles Title

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Gavin Young and Benjamin Kittay of the University of Michigan men's tennis team won the ITA Midwest Regional doubles championship on Monday (Oct. 14) as the four-day event in East Lansing concluded this afternoon. With the victory, Young and Kittay qualify for the NCAA Doubles Championship in November.
The pair defeated pairs from Northern Illinois and Notre Dame by an 8-3 score in the first round. Facing Gabrielius Guzauskas and William Mroz from Illinois in the quarterfinals, the Wolverines pulled out an 8-6 victory. In Sunday's semifinal, Young/Kittay took down MSU's Max Sheldon and Matthew Forbes on their home court in a match that came down to a 10-point tiebreaker. They won the first set 7-6 (11-9), before falling 6-4 in the second set. The tiebreaker was all Maize & Blue, at 10-4. The championship match again went the distance to a tiebreaker against Zachary Viala and Tyler Bowers (Illinois). The duo won the first set, 7-5, before losing, 6-2, in the second. The 10-point set was a battle with the Wolverines coming out on top, 15-13.
Will Cooksey and Patorn Hanchaikul had a fantastic run reaching the quarterfinals. The topped pairs from UIC and Ohio State before falling to the Viala/Bowers 8-6 in the quarterfinal matchup.
In singles play, Michigan won six of seven of its first-round matches. Young highlighted play for the Wolverines reaching the quarterfinals. He posted wins over Greyson Casey (Northwestern) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, Nikita Filin (Ohio State) 6-3, 6-2 and Michael Minasyan (Wisconsin) 6-4, 6-2
losing to No. 70-ranked Alexander Bernard (Ohio State) 6-0, 6-1.
Cooksey won two matches before falling to the No. 1-ranked player, while Nicholas Steighlehner won two matches before falling to Bernard. Hanchaikul also claimed two singles wins as did Alex Cairo -- including his first ranked win -- topping Bryce Nakashima (Ohio State) 6-4, 6-2 in the second round.
The Wolverines will be back in action Nov. 1-3 at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
