
Young, Kittay Advance to NCAA Doubles Championship Second Round

WACO, Texas -- Gavin Young and Benjamin Kittay of the University of Michigan men's tennis team won their opening doubles match at the 2024 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships on Wednesday (Nov. 20) at the Hurd Tennis Center.
The pair battled back after dropping the first set 6-2 to Notre Dame's Sebastian Dominko and Peter Nad to win the second set 6-3 and take the 10-point tiebreaker 11-9.
The Wolverines went down 4-0 in the first set and despite two double faults, they got on the scoreboard with a win in the next game. Each pair held serve through the rest of the set as Notre Dame took the 6-2 win.
The second set was all Maize and Blue as the duo jumped out to a 3-0 lead, with a perfect first game before breaking on deuce point in the second game. From there, the teams held serve with Michigan finishing it off with another perfect game to win 6-3.
In the 10-point tiebreaker, Young and Kittay were able to take three points off of breaks, going up 3-2 on the first. Notre Dame broke twice to gain a 6-4 edge before things leveled out at 7-7 with its second service break. Michigan held serve to gain its first lead (8-7) since they led 3-2. After Notre Dame tied it at 8-8, each team earned a service break to sit 9-9. On serve, Michigan got back-to-back points to capture the 11-9 win.
On Thursday (Nov. 21), the U-M pair faces the No. 1 overall seed, 23rd-ranked Stian Klaassen and Oliver Tarvet of San Diego, at 1Â p.m. CST.
