WACO, Texas -- Gavin Young and Benjamin Kittay of the University of Michigan men's tennis team punched their ticket to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship, knocking off the No. 1 seed on Thursday afternoon (Nov. 21) at the Hurd Tennis Center. With the win, the pair has cemented All-America status.
The duo combined for a thrilling 6-4, 6-1 victory over San Diego's Oliver Tarvet and Stian Klaassen. The San Diego pair is currently ranked No. 23 but earned the No. 1 seed for the tournament.
The first set stayed on serve through the first nine games, with Michigan fending off a pair of break points on its serve in the fifth game for a 3-2 lead. Neither team could secure a break point over the next four games as the Wolverines again held serve at 5-4.
San Diego took a 40-30 lead in the ensuing game, with Michigan winning the following point to send the game to the deuce point. The Wolverines converted on the deuce point, their only break point of the entire set, when Young put away an overhead to seal the first set for the Wolverines.
It was all Michigan in the second set as it got the break on San Diego's first service game, converting the second of three break points for the 2-0 lead. U-M consolidated the break in the next game at love and never looked back, taking a 6-1 second set to stay alive in the tournament.
