NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Tom Brady and Owen MacKenzie of the University of Michigan men's cross country team earned U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Athlete honors, the organization announced Thursday (Feb. 1). In addition to the individual honors, the Wolverines were named an All-Academic Team for the 12th time in 13 years.
Brady, a graduate student pursuing a master's degree in management, was the men's top finisher, earning 27th place at the 2023 Cross Country NCAA Championships with a time of 29:37.1. The Park Ridge, Ill., native earned All-America honors for his effort, the first Wolverine to do so since Devin Meyrer in 2020.
MacKenzie, a graduate transfer pursuing a doctoral degree in biomedical engineering, was the next runner across the finish line for the Maize and Blue. The Mountain View, Calif., native finished in 116th place with a time of 30:42.2.
In order to earn All-Academic distinction, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and finish in the top-25 (or 10 percent) at the NCAA Regional Championships or as an All-American at the NCAA Championships. A total of 116 student-athletes from 57 Division I institutions earned All-Academic distinction.
To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team, teams must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period.
The Wolverines, led by director of track and field and cross country Kevin Sullivan, met that standard for the 10th consecutive year.
