
U-M Unable to Overcome Second-Half Spartan Runs in Loss to MSU

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team fell 73-63 to Michigan State on Saturday (Feb. 17) at Crisler Center.
Leaders and Best
U-M had five players scoring in double figures as Tarris Reed Jr. led the Wolverines with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Dug McDaniel added 13 along with three assists and Jaelin Llewellyn dropped 12 points with four rebounds. Olivier Nkamhoua scored 11 points and Nimari Burnett chipped in 10 points while shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field.
The Turning Point
After U-M tied the game at 61 with 8:07 left, the Wolverines scored just two points, while Michigan State went on 12-2 run to end a Michigan comeback.
Second Half
The Wolverines (8-17, 3-11 Big Ten) started the second half converting on six of its first nine field goals a took a 50-45 lead off a bucket from Nkamhoua at the 14:25 mark. Michigan State (17-9, 9-6 Big Ten) tied the game at 54 with 11:28 remaining after shooting 4-for-4 from the field. Despite losing its lead, Michigan was on a hot streak and made five of six from the field.
MSU continued its shooting success and went on a 9-0 run. With 8:27 remaining, the Spartans led by five (61-56) while Michigan was 0-for-6 from the field and was held scoreless for 3:46. U-M quickly tied the contest at 61 with eight minutes left after two free-throws from Reed and a three-pointer from Burnett ended the scoring and field goal drought for Michigan.
Michigan State went on a 10-0 run in the last six minutes of the game and Michigan did not make a shot over the final seven minutes made only one of its final eight field goals.
First Half
Michigan held an early 16-14 lead seven and a half minutes into the game and shot 77.8 percent (7-for-9) from the field. The Spartans started off hot as well, hitting four out of five field goals leading up to a media timeout. Both squads quickly went cold, going scoreless for more than two minutes. U-M missed its next five field-goal attempts and MSU missed four as the Michigan lead remained the same.
A 7-0 run gave the Spartans a nine-point lead with 4:21 remaining in the first. Michigan was unsuccessful on four straight field goals and was held scoreless for nearly three-minutes, trailing 31-22. Over the next 56 seconds, a 7-0 McDaniel run cut the U-M deficit to two points.
In the final minutes, Michigan went on an 8-0 scoring run making three straight field goals to take a 37-35 lead with 38 seconds left. U-M went into the half trailing 39-37 after MSU converted on four free throws.
What's Next
U-M will travel to Evanston, Ill. for its lone matchup of the season against Northwestern on Thursday (Feb. 22) at Welsh Ryan Arena. The game is set to tipoff at 8 p.m. CST and will be broadcast live on FS1.
Notes
• With 15 points and 11 rebounds, Reed had his second triple-double of the season and of his career.
• Tonight was Reed's sixth game with 10-plus rebounds and 10th with double-figure points this season.
• This was Michigan's first home loss to Michigan State since February 24, 2019. The Wolverines had won four straight.
