ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team compiled a team score of 407.750 to defeat No. 12 Springfield (384.850) and Arizona State (381.700) on Saturday (Feb. 17) inside Cliff Keen Arena.
U-M (9-1) led the meet wire-to-wire, winning all six team and five of seven individual events. Michigan also swept the top three places on parallel bars and high bar and claimed the top two finishes on vault and still rings. Sophomore Fred Richard finished the day with event titles on vault and high bar.
Two Wolverines made their collegiate debuts as freshmen Ty Jordan and Alex Istock represented the block M.
Seven student-athletes established new career-high scores, led by senior Crew Bold, who set two new career highs to tie for first on floor exercise (14.05) and place second on parallel bars (14.50).
How it Happened
Floor Exercise
Michigan began the meet with a 67.650, led by a career-high score of 14.05 from Bold to tie for first place. Wolverines rounded out the top five places as Richard (13.80) and senior Casey Cummings (13.60) placed third and fourth, respectively, while freshman Pierce Wolfgang finished in fifth with a personal best score of 13.50.
Pommel horse
The Wolverines compiled a 66.800 as sophomore Kevin Chow tied for second place and set a new career-high score (13.60). Freshman Jake Islam competed on the apparatus for the first time and took fourth place with a score of 13.50.
Still Rings
U-M tallied a total of 66.550 as senior Chris Read led the Wolverines' efforts, setting a new career high of 14.35 and winning the event. Richard earned a second-place finish with a score of 13.95.
Vault
Richard took the event win on the table with a 14.90, setting a new personal-best score that ranks fourth in the country. Cummings claimed a second-place finish with a score of 14.55 as U-M recorded a team total of 70.300 on the event.
Parallel bars
Michigan extended its lead with a team total of 69.250, claiming four of the top-five finishes. First and second place were earned via career highs from junior Logan McKeown (14.60) and Bold (14.50). Wolfgang scored a 13.70 to take third as junior Lais Najjar finished fifth with a score of 13.30.
High bar
The Wolverines' dominance continued on high bar as U-M swept the three podium places. Richard (14.45) secured the event title while sophomore Robert Noll set a career-high score of 13.95 to take second place. The final podium place went to Bold, who scored a 13.30. A total of 67.200 on the event gave Michigan a final score of 407.750.
