NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team lost a 4-0 match to No. 3 Texas on Saturday (Feb. 17) in the consolation round of the ITA National Indoor Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
The highlight of the match was a 6-3 win for Gavin Young and Jacob Bickersteth at No. 1 doubles as they dispatched the No. 5 duo of Eliot Spizzirri and Cleeve Harper, who entered the match with an 11-3 record. It was the first ranked pair Bickersteth and Young have defeated together. Young improves to 14-6 against ranked doubles pairs in his career, while it is the first for Bickersteth.
Young and Bickersteth ran into the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked singles players, Spizzirri and Micah Braswell, respectively. The Longhorns took both matches. Harper captured the final team point at No. 5 singles as he defeated Will Cooksey 6-4, 6-4.
Bjorn Swenson and No. 53 ranked Pierre-Yves Bailly each took a set at No. 4 and Nicholas Steiglehner led Jonah Braswell 6-4, 2-2 at No. 6 before the match was halted, as was No. 3 singles with Texas up in the second set after winning the first.
Michigan concludes its trip to the 2024 ITA Indoor National Championship taking on Arizona State at 9 a.m., on Sunday (Feb. 18).
