BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The University of Michigan softball team was rained out with a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning against Seton Hall, coming up one out shy of the game becoming official in its Joan Joyce Classic finale on Sunday morning (Feb. 18) at Joan Joyce Field. Since the teams did not reach the minimum number of innings, all statistics are voided, and the contest is deemed a "no game."
Michigan posted six hits and two walks and took advantage of aggressive base running to plate runs in the first and second innings. Sophomore outfielder Indiana Langford tallied both U-M runs. She beat out an infield single to lead off the game, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when senior catcher Keke Tholl laced a comeback single past the pitcher and up the middle. Tholl posted two hits.
Langford's second inning run looked much like the first. She reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and came home when junior outfielder Ellie Sieler knocked a double to the wall in center field.
Seton Hall got on the board in the fourth after a walk and wild pitch of their own put a runner in scoring position and an unlucky bounce scored her when a double glanced off the diving shortstop's glove and redirected the ball away from the backup left fielder.
The game was called with two outs and a SHU runner on first in the top of the fifth.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Erin Hoehn allowed the one run on three hits and two walks and struck out three.
The Wolverines (6-3) will kick off their annual spring break trip with a five-game appearance at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament next Friday through Sunday (Feb. 23-25) in Santa Barbara, Calif. Michigan opens play against Northern Colorado at 11:30 a.m. PST and Sacramento State at 2 p.m. PST on Friday (Feb. 23) at UCSB's Campus Diamond.
