
Wolverines Looking to Defend Title at Big Ten Indoor Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team will look to defend last season's Big Ten Indoor title at the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 23-24). Action at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, will begin 11:30 a.m. on both days, with the event to be streamed live on B1G+.
Notes
• Michigan athletes to watch at this weekend's championships include Savannah Sutherland in the 400-meter dash, Aasia Laurencin in the 60-meter hurdles, Maria Deaviz in the shot put, Samantha Saenz in the 5,000-meter run and the distance medley relay team.
• The reigning indoor champions, U-M saw three individual champions and two relay champions. Riley Ammenhauser claimed the triple jump crown with a mark of 13.18m (43 feet, 3 inches), Ziyah Holman earned the 400-meter dash title (51.39 seconds), and Aurora Rynda won the 600-meter run title (1:27.30). Holman, Sophie Isom, Nikki Stephens, and Sutherland claimed the 4x400-meter relay title (3:30.63) while Holman, Rynda, Anna Juul, and Sam Tran claimed the distance medley relay title (10:57.57).
• The Maize and Blue sat in third place after the first day of competition last season paced by the DMR title and three school records from BreeAna Bates (60-meter dash, 7.33) and Sutherland (200-meter dash, 23.58 and 400-meter dash, 52.39).
• U-M's four titles on day two (Holman, 400-meter dash; Rynda, 600-meter run, Ammenhauser, triple jump; 4x400-meter relay) and four school records (Holman, 400-meter dash, 51.39; Ammenhauser, triple jump, 13.18m; 4x400-meter relay, 3:30.63; Sutherland, 200-meter dash, 23.41) helped push the team into first place, scoring 109 points to second place Ohio State's 90.
• Three Wolverines saw podium finishes, with Laurencin placing second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.09), Sutherland placing second in the 400-meter dash (51.41), and Juul finishing third in the mile (4:36.75).
• Michigan scored points in other events, including Tran's four points in the mile (4:43.39), Nadia Saunders' four points in the triple jump (12.82m/42 feet, 0,75 inches), and Corinne Jemison's three points in the shot put (16.47m/54 feet, 0.5 inches).
• In addition to the trophy, the Wolverines had nine athletes earn All-Big Ten recognition over the course of the championships.
