
DMR Claims Silver; U-M in 8th after Day 1 of B1G Championships

GENEVA, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team earned its first medal of the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Friday (Feb. 23), with the distance medley relay team finishing second.
After one day of competition, the Maize and Blue sits in eighth place with 12 points through the first six events.
The DMR team of Samantha Hastie, Sidney Green, Penelopea Gordon and Sam Tran posted the team's top finish of the day, placing second with a time of 11:13.73 behind first-place Michigan State (11:12.91).
Samantha Saenz recorded four of the team's points, finishing fifth in the 5000-meter run with a season best time of 16:15.28.
Two pentathletes finished just shy of the top-eight, with Clare McNamara placing ninth with a personal best 3,713 points and Mia Manson placing 10th with a personal best 3,700 points. Manson saw personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles (9.17), the shot put (9.99m), the long jump (5.75m), and the 800-meter run (2:23.61) while McNamara saw a personal best 800-meter run (2:15.95). McNamara's 3,713 total points is good for the 10th best mark in program history.
Aasia Laurencin ran a personal best time of 8.06 in the 60-meter hurdles to finish second in the preliminaries and advance to the finals. Savannah Sutherland finished second in the 400-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 52.18, while Sidney Green finished eighth with a time 54.16 in her Big Ten Championship debut, with both advancing to the finals.
Hastie and Tran advanced to the finals of the mile run, posting times of 4:46.66 and 4:44.26, respectively. Gordon (2:03.94) and Cassie Kearney (2:06.72) will advance to the finals of the 800-meter run.
U-M will close out the Big Ten Championships on Saturday, Feb. 24.
