
Michigan to Open 2024 Season at No. 3 Virginia

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team (0-0) will open up the 2024 season against No. 3 Virginia (0-0) on Saturday (Feb. 10) at noon from Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va.
Notes
• U-M is ranked No. 11 in the Inside Lacrosse Media poll, No. 9 in the USILA Poll and No. 13 in the USA Lacrosse Preseason Poll. The rankings are all the highest in program history.
• Sophomores Carson Billig, Bo Lockwood, and Hunter Taylor were tabbed as U-M's Big Ten Players to Watch. In the Big Ten Preseason Poll, U-M was picked to finish fourth. Johns Hopkins was picked first, followed by Penn State and Maryland. Ohio State and Rutgers held down the No. 5 and No. 6 spots.
• Graduate transfer Beau Pederson (first team), senior Justin Wietfeldt (second team), senior Michael Boehm (third team) and graduate transfer Christian Ronda (honorable mention) were named USA Lacrosse Preseason All-American's. Additionally, Pederson (first team), Boehm (third team) and Wietfeldt (honorable mention) earned Inside Lacrosse honors, while Pederson (first team) was listed by the USILA.
• Boosted by Pederson and Ronda, U-M's largest-ever transfer class will look to make an impact, as the five-member group was ranked as the second best in the country per IL. Attackman Justin Tiernan (Lehigh) ranked No. 14 in Inside Lacrosse's Transfer Power Rankings while Cathal Roberts (Princeton) was ranked No. 18. Former Bucknell defender Andrew Stanzel rounds out the group that looks to feature prominently for the Maize and Blue in 2024.
• The Wolverine attack unit, led by Boehm (45 goals, 28 assists, 73 points), junior Ryan Cohen (27g, 30a, 57 points) and Tiernan (46g, 9a, 55 points) is one of the top returning groups in the nation, boasting 185 points.
• U-M will take on six top-20 ranked teams in the IL Preseason Media poll, highlighted by No. 3 UVA, No. 6 Maryland, No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 15 Rutgers, No. 16 Delaware and No. 13 Harvard. Other opponents in Marquette, Jacksonville, Harvard, and Ohio State are receiving votes in the poll.
• Last season, the Wolverines fell to the Cavaliers 17-13 on Feb. 11, 2023. Boehm became the seventh player in U-M history to reach the 100-point plateau in the second quarter, while the Wolverines were within one goal on seven separate occasions but were outscored 4-1 in the fourth quarter. U-M marked 13 goals from nine different goal scorers, with Cohen leading the offense with three and two assists for five points in the first meeting between the schools.
