
Wolverines Fall to No. 3 Virginia in Season Opener

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell by a 19-11 score against No. 3 Virginia on Saturday (Feb. 10) at Klockner Stadium.
Michigan (0-1) fell behind 3-0 in the first 4:30 of the contest before graduate student Justin Tiernan converted on a man-up chance off a helper from sophomore Bo Lockwood at 2:46 of the opening quarter. In all, the Wolverines trailed 5-1 after one quarter of action.
U-M's second extra-man goal of the contest came at 8:29 of the second quarter, as Boehm became the third player in U-M history to eclipse the 100-goal plateau off a feed from Lockwood.
The Wolverines closed the half with their first even-strength goal of the contest on a step-down rip from senior Isaac Aronson at 2:10 of the second off a helper from junior Ryan Cohen.
Coming out of the half trailing 10-3, Tiernan added his second of the day from Lockwood at 13:51. Following a UVA score, a tally from Boehm at 11:21 brought the count to 11-5.
The Cavaliers answered with two tallies before Lockwood (8:42) and Tiernan's third of the day at 7:57 brought the score to 13-7. The consecutive scores 45 seconds apart were the first back-to-back tallies for the Wolverine offense.
However, UVA closed the quarter on a 4-1 run, broken up by Aronson's second of the contest with two minutes to go in the stanza. The score began a 3-0 Wolverine run, as senior Justin Brown tallied his second of the day at 13:57, followed by junior Aidan Mulholland at 12:27 to run the count to 17-10 early in the fourth quarter.
The Wolverine scoring presence was closed out by Cohen with 3:55 to go off a helper from Mulholland and put a bow on the 19-11 defeat.

Cohen had a team-high four points (one goal, three assists), while Lockwood saw his first extended time as a Wolverine in the contest with a career-best trio of assists. Tiernan finished his day with a trio of markers on nine shots in his first game in the maize and blue.
Ten student-athletes made their U-M debuts in graduate students Beau Pederson, Christian Ronda, Tiernan, Roberts and Andrew Stanzel. Sophomore Mason Whitney, in addition to freshmen Rowan Clay, Jackie Weller, Jack Jenkins, Nick Roode.
The Wolverines open up the home portion of their 2024 slate on Tuesday (Feb. 13), as Canisius visit Ann Arbor. Opening faceoff from U-M Lacrosse Stadium is slated for 4 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
