
Michigan Men Collect Four Medals on Third Day of B1G Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team collected three individual medals and one relay medal on day three of the Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday (March 1) at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Michigan now checks in at third with 770.5 points, trailing only Ohio State (820 points) and Indiana (996 points).
It was another solid morning for U-M as 17 swimmers advanced to a final across five individual events. The highlight of the preliminary session came in the 100-yard butterfly as three Wolverines reached the championship final. Sophomore Tyler Ray finished with the second-best time of the session, posting a 44.77. After successfully defending his 200-yard IM conference crown on Thursday (Feb. 29), Gal Groumi clocked a 44.80 to comfortably reach the final. Freshman Colin Geer touched the wall at 46.02 to finish seventh in the preliminary round.
The 100-yard butterfly started the evening session, and Michigan dominated the podium. Groumi secured silver with a time of 44.60, and Ray took the bronze, clocking a 44.91. Geer rounded out the event with a mark of 46.04 to finish eighth overall.
Eitan Ben-Shitrit led the way for the Maize and Blue in the 400-yard IM, registering a time of 3:44.06 to finish sixth overall. Logan Zucker posted the top time in the B final of the 200-yard freestyle with a mark of 1:34.72. Brendan Fitzpatrick secured eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke by posting a time of 52.82. Jack Wilkening and Jacque Wenger rounded out the individual A finalists for Michigan. Both swimmers competed in the 100-yard backstroke final; Wilkening secured the first conference medal of his career with a third-place time of 45.57. Wenger finished eighth with a mark of 46.16.
The relays stayed hot for U-M as the 200-yard freestyle team of Groumi, Ray, Bence Szabados and Wilkening captured the silver medal and broke the school record in the event with a time of 1:16.15. Michigan has earned a medal in every relay race so far in this year's conference championships.
The Wolverines will wrap up the Big Ten Championships on Saturday (March 2) at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The final day will feature the 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 100-yard freestyle, 1,650-yard freestyle, platform diving and 400-yard freestyle relay. Preliminaries will start at 10:00 a.m., and finals will commence at 5:00 p.m.
